I mean it when I say this, what the fuck did I just watch? Tom Cruise, Aliens, John Williams going so hard, like what was this? And what was that ending? Like, huh? What? This was, like good I guess but really, what the fuck did I watch? I mean Spielberg's direction hits so hard and I love to see really good CGI in 2000s movies, but still, what was this? Also happy father's day, which Tom Cruise isn't in this
This was my first movie in a multiplex theatre when I was a kid. Still absolutely rules and aged so well. Spielberg doing Spielberg things. PEAK.

It looked like some sellout bullshit Michael Bay would do!" — Quentin Tarantino I think for such an anticlimactic story it really needed a much more artistic approach and the generic action just really falls flat. I think the biggest problem is the writing. I don’t mind the estranged father angle and even like cruises performance but it just doesn’t get any traction till the brother “dies”. I think they should have killed him off much earlier on the film thus pushing the father and daughter closer together.

68/100 Yet another weak adaptation of a well-written book, but one with enough substance for me to consider just an average alien invasion movie with some great scenes. The first half of this movie is some really good stuff. Granted, I'm not a huge fan of the family drama clashing with the alien invasion, but there is some genuine atmospheric tension to be found here. The first massacre by the Tripods is really frightening and intense, and this continues throughout to be the case throughout. This is in part thanks to some fantastic sound design and VFX for the Tripods, giving them a futuristic feel. John Williams' score is also brilliant here as usual, and it feels even better saying that since it's been a while since I have. So many iconic scenes in this movie are also very great.
