The elderly Shukishi and his wife, Tomi, take the long journey from their small seaside village to visit their adult children in Tokyo. Their elder son, Koichi, a doctor, and their daughter, Shige, a hairdresser, don't have much time to spend with their aged parents, and so it falls to Noriko, the widow of their younger son who was killed in the war, to keep her in-laws company.

Defiantly one of the greatest films of all time. Haven’t seen too many movies that are able to give us so much while saying so little. There is so much to be said about families and relationships that this movie tackles, like how people will put their career and goals over their own parents, which is not an intention that’s actually in poor spirit, it’s just a natural thing that happens to people. I love how the movie doesn’t give a direct solution to how people are able to balance their life with their family, the person who does manage to do that, is still clearly not the most mentally stable person in the film and is likely preforming those acts as a reaction to her husbands death. It’s just a really beautiful movie with so much depth and subtly.
