If the whole treatment was like the first 15 minutes of the film, then this could have been a masterpiece. First 15 minutes is what Mani Ratnam is known for. Other parts not so much. He can’t handle action clearly. Whenever action sequences came on screen, the already weak script became even weaker. But whenever it was subtle and drama oriented, I could see some strokes of brilliance that Mani is known for but unfortunately short lived throughout the film. Good cinematography didn’t help too. ARR’s songs work well but the background score felt off during many of the punchy or action sequences - One of the most important sequences had Harry Potter-ish music that completely changed the tone of the scene. Weird choice of music in more than one scene. ARR is also at his best when it’s not action on screen. Seems like both Mani and ARR need to get back to their OG roots and forget action or massy films.
