Actress Jane Wilkinson wants a divorce, but her husband, Lord Edgware, refuses. She convinces Hercule Poirot to use his famed tact and logic to make her case. Lord Edgware turns up murdered, a well-placed knife wound at the base of his neck. It will take the precise Poirot to sort out the lies from the alibis - and find the criminal before another victim dies.

There are several things of note to this film:
- Despite all three adaptations prior being period pieces this made for tv film (and I assume the two that follow it) are all contemporary. Even though the lead is the same as the two previous theatrical films. The only reason for this I can assume is budgetary concerns.
- the inclusion of Hastings with a mere wave and the only introduction is that of his name. He is not any of the previous films in name or otherwise but included as if we always knew who he was and it would be superfluous to make mention of it.
