“Who’s moving that cloud? Amassing those birds? Who’s moving that water?” 2026 Ranked ATHENA “Tiresias told you. Circe told you. The Gods told you—“ ODYSSEUS “You Gods don’t speak in ways we understand!” ATHENA “Who doesn’t understand pain?! Or blood?! Or death?!” I saw the Odyssey today in IMAX 70mm. This will probably be my fourth and last viewing of the movie until eventually it comes out on disc or digital. And it STILL hits. Never felt the runtime for a single second. Also, it is 100% worth it to see IMAX 70mm. The picture was huge and it just looked so much better. It felt more real and more timeless. Also this movie was born to be on VHS. I can’t imagine how good it would look on a CRT.  Ever since I’ve seen this movie, I’ve seen connections everywhere. Intentional or not, so much is inspired by this story and its themes. This is its strength. Watch this and you can see all the threads stretching out to every story since.  “Because no one is his own father. I'm not my dad. No matter how hard he tried to beat that idea into me. I find the world a bitter and complicated place, and it seems to feel the same way about me. I think you and I have this in common. But don't get me wrong, you have your challenges. You're erratic and belligerent and gigantic pain in the balls, but you're not your father. You're your own man. Man, no. You're just a kid. You're just beginning. And you're smart. You've got time to turn things around. Yes, I know that Greeks had the idea that the steps you take to avoid your fate are the very steps that lead you to it, but that's just a literary conceit. In real life, your history does not have to dictate your destiny.” I understand certain criticisms of this film and maybe it doesn’t live up to the fullness of its own potential. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that this is still an awesome film with incredible value. This has impacted me and influenced and changed the way I see movies. An incredible adventure that I can’t keep from returning to.  ATHENA “When you watch your men die, do you see chance? Or do you see consequence?  ODYSSEUS “I see consequence. I see my failure.” ATHENA “What if their deaths aren’t your failing but theirs?” ODYSSEUS “I lead them. I led them here.” ATHENA “And who led you? Why do you put yourself above the Gods? Why do you claim responsibility?” “Why don’t you want to go home?” “All the things you wanted to be and then all the things you wished you never wished for. It was a delicious itch you want to scratch but you find it under the skin and can't reach it. So the delicious itch becomes unbearable. It told you what you most want is what you most can't have and that the most you can't have is what you already had and lost. It was a song of all the promises I failed to keep. And it told me I don't really want to go home.” CALYPSO “The lotus clouds the mind and saps the will, but it doesn’t change who you are. You weren’t ready to go home, for whatever reason.” ODYSSEUS “I am now.” CALYPSO “As I always knew you would be…” “You're a man who needs to control his fate. But you cannot control this. You must give yourself to the storm, give yourself to Poseidon. And take your punishment. Give up the fight, give up control, and live. It is a leap of faith you haven't yet made, Odysseus.”
