Pennsylvania, 1956. Frank Sheeran, a war veteran of Irish origin who works as a truck driver, accidentally meets mobster Russell Bufalino. Once Frank becomes his trusted man, Bufalino sends him to Chicago with the task of helping Jimmy Hoffa, a powerful union leader related to organized crime, with whom Frank will maintain a close friendship for nearly twenty years.

Some weird editing near the end (almost certainly on purpose). I liked the callbacks in the script. I enjoyed the presence of Peggy's character. The de-aging CGI is pretty fine most at the time but has the “floating-head feeling” especially in that gas station scene at the beginning. It’s visually interesting. I don’t know how I feel about the characters and the story, though. I liked Jimmy Hoffa the most, he was a character that felt very well defined and interesting. I gotta say, a lot of times I had no idea what was going on, but that didn’t take me out as much I thought it would.
Scorses-a-thon “When I was young, I thought house painters painted houses. What did I know? I was a working guy. A business agent for Teamster Local 107 out of South Philly. One of a thousand working stiffs... until I wasn't no more. And then I started painting houses... myself.” The gangs all back together. This truly is a family reunion with even Harvey Keitel back in the fold. And I think for that it’s worth it, but maybe only for real Scorseseheads. There’s not a lot of flash here, and it’s a pretty straightforward recounting of events. There’s a little playing with time in the beginning, but by the halfway point, that’s all done. It’s just kind of dry. In some ways, it’s clearly going for the Goodfellas thing, and it really has that feeling in the beginning, but it just loses steam.
After watching this film twice now, I can honestly say that this is a full-on masterpiece. It shows the thrill and fun of the mob life with the consequences of what happens after. Yes the de-ageing is a little wonky in some parts, the curb-stomping scene isn't well-done, and the movie starts super slow, but it picks up pace when we're introduced to Jimmy. This isn't the same director who has made Goodfellas and Casino, this is a director who has created Silence, and Killers of The Flower Moon. This is a director who has matured and learned to hone his craft to the fullest potential. I know this movie will probably be topped but, im glad I made this review either way
