The Father2020

This is the kind of a film that I honestly never thought would make me use the word “MINDBLOWING”. The thing is script could have been written in a way that many are used to but this is very much like Charlie Kaufman’s character and that’s why I loved it even more than what I thought it would be. It goes totally into the mind of a character and this in itself makes it a non-linear storytelling, as here in The Father, character has dementia and how brilliantly it’s written. We are feeling him, seeing what he’s seeing, we are even made to think like him but in seconds we are made to wonder what’s happening, “are we in the same flat or is it a different place? Is that his daughter? Or somebody else? Now who is that guy?Where is his watch again? New caretaker stole it?, I just saw this scene right? Etc etc” all these came to my mind as if I was living the life of Anthony’s character and his troubled mind. This is incredible writing and not at all easy to execute something as complex as this. Also one thing I realised was the choice of music - especially in the beginning and also the music lead character is interested in. Opera music has always had that enigmatic tone to it. The starting 3-5 minutes of music set the mysterious tone which is unusual in such films that is supposed to be a proper drama film. But it all really made sense as lead character’s mind also sensed everything in a mysterious way because of dementia. The whole tone itself was almost like a psychological mystery movie. It’s a master stroke.  Phenomenal Anthony should just win an Oscar for this and also the film became my most favourite out of all the nominated ones so far.
