We live in a world where the vast majority of our lives is spent in a virtual, incredibly unreal place. It starts when we are born and continues throughout the rest of our mortal existence. We share every aspect of our lives. Every thought we’ve ever had. Every thing we’ve ever done. There is a place and a family for everyone here. Everyone, anyone, is accepted here. Somewhere. On the other side is a world where the only way to exist is to lie. To be disingenuous. To hide. To hide your emotions. Lest your inner secrets are found out and you become shunned and banished. And we are taught that we should prefer the latter world. That we should lie and buy into the lie. We believe that because everyone presents themselves in a certain way, that is who they truly are. And that you are what’s wrong. You are broken. You are different. What do you do? Where do you go? If you have no place in the “real” world, then maybe you try to find some place in the other one. It is crazy to look around and think that every single person you see feels like you feel. Lives and hurts like you do. Anyone that says they don’t is lying. Which is what you have to do to live in the real world. We are inundated, overwhelmed with violence. It is a massive part of our everyday lives. We wish to be violent. We crave connection. We want to live. We want to make reckless choices and do terrible things. And we don’t. We try not to. And instead of doing violent things to others, we internalize. We are violent to ourselves. Because we still crave connection. I was never violent to myself. Instead, I became numb. I feel numb. I feel alone. But by my logic, there must be other people who feel the way I feel. But even though I crave feeling and connection, I am more scared of not being numb. And so I can’t fully connect. I can’t be fully present. I am inside. People pretend to not understand Emma. Everyone pretends to not need connection because that is what the real world says. She didn’t go through with it because she knew she would not feel the connection she craved. And when she changed it wasn’t a lie because it was never about hurting anyone. It was about being alone. Our world is a feedback loop that is focused on keeping the status quo. Even if that status quo is reliant on its own destruction to exist. There’s really nowhere to go with this. There’s nothing you can really do with this information. Knowing this does not make your life better. In fact it really makes it worse. And so the cycle continues. And on and on and on.
