While the Second World War rages, the teenage Mahito, haunted by his mother's tragic death, is relocated from Tokyo to the serene rural home of his new stepmother Natsuko, a woman who bears a striking resemblance to the boy's mother. As he tries to adjust, this strange new world grows even stranger following the appearance of a persistent gray heron, who perplexes and bedevils Mahito, dubbing him the "long-awaited one."

I love it when animated movies realize that they're animated movies and they can do whatever the fuck they want
Wonderful. Absolutely worth watching
奇幻又令人沉迷的設定
even though I had a not-so-great theater experience, with a group of people being very loud in the row behind me, I was able to feel extremely immersed in the world of The Boy and The Heron. It felt like a dream. I could try to interpret this dream, and maybe it would even make sense (the themes of the film seem to be on grief and dealing with being able to move on into new life after loss.) but that would be oversimplifying the movie. The animation here is like magic, you know it's not real but the enjoyment comes in trying your hardest to believe in the world that's being painted here. This journey is a gorgeous, imaginative one, where every step of the way gets you asking questions about the film, about the world, and for me the main question was: “what do we do with death?” should we move on as quick as possible? should we run from it as much as we can? a bit of spoilers…

Hayao Miyazaki Biggest Hits Remix 2023. Oczywiście przesadzam, ale tak widocznego recyklingu własnych pomysłów się po mistrzu z Japonii nie spodziewałem. I nawet gdybym miał to zignorować, to nadal jest to dla mnie najsłabszy Miyazaki pod niemalże każdym względem - od historii, przez design świata i postaci, po tempo narracji czy muzykę (niestety dosłownie nic nie wpadło mi w ucho jakoś mocniej, pierwszy raz w jego filmach). To napisawszy, nadal uważam Chłopca i Czaplę za jakościowe kino, warte zobaczenia chociaż jeden raz.
