A group of people are standing along the platform of a railway station in La Ciotat, waiting for a train. One is seen coming, at some distance, and eventually stops at the platform. Doors of the railway-cars open and attendants help passengers off and on. Popular legend has it that, when this film was shown, the first-night audience fled the café in terror, fearing being run over by the "approaching" train. This legend has since been identified as promotional embellishment, though there is evidence to suggest that people were astounded at the capabilities of the Lumières' cinématographe.

I didn’t get out of the way in time and I actually got crushed by the train.
74/100 I must make a confession: I am not a horror fan in the slightest. However, I have seen a couple of them in the past, mainly creature features, and I have finally decided to undertake the task of viewing this film. However, even as I prepared for a harrowing experience, I could not imagine the terror this movie inflicted on me. The arrival of the titular train is perhaps one of the scariest scenes I have ever seen in a movie, if not the scariest. Really, it seemed for a moment as if I was about to be run straight over. Sadly, the movie overstays its welcome slightly, and without much in the way of characterization, this movie, while with a strong start and middle, peters out into a weak conclusion not at all fitting for the rest of the film. Despite this, I would say the film achieved its objective and is a very effective and horrifying classic for a reason, as well as a good film.
