I am glad to have started my year with this movie. Going into it I was promised a story set at the dawn of Tetris, one of the greatest milestones in gaming, and the Gameboy, a small device that went a long way in shaping my life. What I was blissfully unaware of however was the larger than life epic that was told through the most intimate and humane characters; a story about passion, art, gaming, family, freedom, politics and greed set in motion during the rot that would consume one of the most powerful political entities of its time.

Unbelievable all those things had happened just to get the rights of the game. Thanks to the involvement of Soviet Union’s “Bastard commies” that made this movie so engrossing and entertaining till the end. That angle gave this film a zeal and a Cold War thrill. “Thanks” ends only there for the movie because what they did in real life that time was nothing but disgusting. Still doing the same (Russia). Addition of 8-bit visuals in the film was another beautiful thing. Then terrific production design and superb music. Lastly really solid performance by Taron Egerton and also supporting actors. Extra marks for making me nostalgic. As a gamer since I was 6-7 years old, this was like a treasure. Goosebumps when they revealed the first ever gameboy. Then the mention of Zelda, Mario, everything gave me lot of memories. Few questionable “creative freedom” choices towards the end was my only gripe. Overall a very easy breezy watch.
