Return to Silent Hill2026

Despite the fact that I have not played Silent Hill 2, this still felt exactly like watching one of those edits where they put all the cutscenes together to make a movie. And I have seen enough of this game to be able to tell that this seems to deter very little from the game. A lot of shot-for-shot stuff in the beginning, which is definitely the part I’ve seen and know the best. I actually would like to know if and how it differs from the original, so if you’ve played the game and seen this, let me know! But because I get the feeling that it’s so similar to the game, I feel like I can’t judge it inherently as a film and have to judge it strictly as an adaptation, which I can’t do because, as mentioned before, I haven’t played it. This definitely feels like one of those things where you have to ask “who is this for?” For someone like me, all the details are going to go over my head, and for a true fan of the games, I doubt they would prefer this over just playing the game? Also, if you told me that this was the same director as the original Silent Hill, I would not believe you. This movie is so much more glossy and bland with the flashback moments like a Tremfya commercial, and when the world changes, it looks like the upside down. Which I guess is just a testament to how digitalization and modernity have destroyed filmmaking across the board. The original movie has such a great look and feel with real sets and locations. I am 99% sure everything in return was shot on a green screen.  So on a technical aspect, it’s disappointing, and the writing leaves a lot to be desired, though I blame that more on the source material. Overall, the story is good, but it does feel like some stuff could be better explained, and other stuff is overexplained.  I think the original Silent Hill movie works because they changed so much from the game. And I think every good adaptation really needs someone willing to make it their own to some extent while still having respect for the source material. This movie just feels like they wanted to just make it a one-for-one, and that doesn’t really work.  I’m going to be generous with my rating. I feel a lot of people are just going to hate this or write it off, but it’s not that bad. It’s just weak. And disappointing.
