Singularly redefined the potential heights of the horror genre ever, for a first viewing experience, it is uncomfortably horrific and atrociously macabre. In a film that is utterly filled with nihilistic and existential philosophy, to be mentally prepared is an understatement. It is a testament to Żuławski's harsh confrontation with the themes of divorce, in which it really shows how he shaped a film that can perpetually rival the mainstream platform. Depicting a grotesque and eerie atmosphere, contorted performances that are shakingly disturbing, and a twisted narrative that accumulates to a borderline ending. Singlehandledly might be my favorite horror film up to date.
