Marriage Story, but it turns into a hentai directed by the Devil. Possession is split into two halves, both are excellent, but the way we experience the movie drastically changes between them. The first half is a story about a couple falling outta love, we witness the destruction of their relationship and the spectrum of emotions each of them goes through, the dialogue and acting are fucking excellent. The movie keeps you on the edge of your seat simply by having a couple argue, something so simple yet very effective. I loved this first half. It felt deeply human, a poignant exploration of love, loyalty, and the toll they take on us. And the BAM, the devil gets involved in the movie and it enters into what the fuck territory. Blood sacrifices, Ominous monologues, Doppelgangers, An octopus? Nothing, i mean nothing, could have prepared me for what was yet to come. And yet, the film feels coherent. You’re not overwhelmed by the shift as the movie steadily and very slowly builds up to it. So when shit goes down, it feels like someone flipped the movie on its head. But what even is the movie about? At first, it seemed like an exploration of a breakup, but by the end, I truly didn’t know what had happened. For starters, the implication of the devil or the monster in the story shifts the perspective of the first part as the wife, Anna was indeed possessed...Shocking. I know, the movie is called "Possession" and the main character is possessed, Wow, who would have thought? regardless, there are many things i don't understand. Why does Mark’s character change so abruptly? What is the entity’s purpose and meaning? And where does Helen fit into all of this? Because i believe she’s the key to these questions. the monster's involvement was clearly an allegory to hell, to the hellish nature of a breakup. Especially true after years of marriage and a kid down the line. But to understand the meaning of that creature, we need to give it an origin, as the movie throws it at us with 0 context so the question at hand. Did anna create that thing or did that thing possess Anna? With how ambiguous the movie is, i think both can be correct. But there must be a factual narrative, one that allows us to understand the movie as this question is at the core of understanding the movie because it's answer massively changes how we view the story. And for the sake of my sanity, I'm leaning into the idea that the creature originated from her, that it is a manifestation of her devilish nature. So we got Anna, conflicted and torn between her desires and responsibilities, as both a mother and a wife, as well as responsibilities towards herself and her identity, she succumbs to her inner shadow, and eventually becomes possessed by it, a slave to her problems and desires. Not only that, but she finds refuge in it, isolating herself with this entity in that gloomy apartment. Nurturing it until it becomes something else, or perhaps it becomes something she craves..We see the entity grow through the bodies that were damned to step into her apartment. And as her mental state deteriorated, the entity grew even more. With the flesh to form a body, and torment to whisper soul in it, the ùonster shapes itself in the form of doppelganger of her husband Mark. I find this very interesting, as the monster reflects Anna's desires, it shapes Itself to have the face of the man she no longer have feelings for, perhaps a part of her still longs for him. But this isn't just mark, it's an idealized version of him. And thus, their separation manifests itself with a body nourished by Anna and a face that belongs to Mark almost like it's mocking him, it is the sum of Anna's deepest desires and a rejection of the man she married, a perfect husband born out of her broken psyche. And as the couple breathes their last breath, the monster she created stands over them, the embodiment of their separation. But the movie doesn't end there, the monster, continues its propagation Reaching Helen's house. Helen, who took care of Anna and Mark's kid, Helen, the Angel that came out of nowhere, dressed in her white robe, is sought by the devil in its dark blazer. The connection between them is even more obvious other than their contrasting visuals, both Helen and the monster share the same green eyes and it is at this moment we finally understand what Helen represents. Also, never thought I'd see a child commit suicide... Helen makes her debut in the movie at a moment where Mark lost his Anna. He lost the the security she provided, and the peace she gave him and his son. Dressed in white from head to toe, bearing the face of a lover Mark lost, Helen is nothing short of an Angel that made its way to Mark's life. Just as Anna gave life to her own demon, Mark also brought his Angel to life as he also made an ideal partner, furthermore solidifying the rupture between them.
