Maybe I'm giving this movie such a high rating, but I honestly think this is an excellent film and I have been floored away with the twist of the story, it's execution and the acting. This is only my second Kim Ki-duk film. Looking at the rest of his filmography, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring is such a departure from the rest of his ouvre that you think it was made by a different person, so I will consider Pieta as my proper introduction to his extreme and odious world. What took me so long from seeing this? I'll blame it partly on the reviews that was blown-out of proportion by people who can't handle violence in movies properly. All of the elements that I read before, that was supposed to make me cower, wasn't even that stomach churning to begin with. I felt the same way when I saw Sion Sono's Cold Fish. Since I haven't gotten to his other films yet, this may be (based on popular opinion) a tamer project compare to the likes of Moebius and The Isle, but I think Pieta is an excellent way to begin things. First and foremost, this is a revenge film. Do you think the woman claiming to be his mother is telling the truth or is it mainly a plot device to just mess with the lead character's head? That's what you'll have to find out to really see this as a revenge film. I like that the performances were not overacted, unlike Park Chan-wook's Oldboy that just gave me the cringe during the last half. Ki-duk managed to keep the humor intact despite of some moments being real awkward giving viewers a chance to take a breather so we can separate the movie from reality.
Tanie szokowanie, w najlepszym wypadku przeciętne aktorstwo, toporne dialogi i symbolika.
