Impoverished priest Harihar Ray, dreaming of a better life for himself and his family, leaves his rural Bengal village in search of work. Alone, his wife, Sarbojaya, looks after her rebellious daughter, Durga, and her young son, Apu, as well as Harihar's elderly aunt Indir. The children enjoy the small pleasures of their difficult life, while their parents suffer the daily indignities heaped upon them.

Ravi Shankar’s score elevates this already beautifully immersive and humane storytelling to another level. Absolutely mesmerising direction and lingers visually, literally every frame. Whatever great things said for this film since decades were on point. Thanks to Nolan and his recent Criterion closet visit for reminding me to watch the Apu Trilogy. One masterpiece down. 2 to go and many more Satyajit Ray films.
