John Wick but better
Firstly, this is nothing we haven’t seen before. I mean, retired guy with a dark past, lives with his family now as a normal guy with boring routine, gets into some trouble and then forced into his past shit to save himself and family. It’s all very familiar. But in that familiarity director tries to put some brutal action sequences that are supremely enjoyable to watch and even though it doesn’t break any bigger stereotypes, the little build up of an important characters are shown superbly which is usually missing in such films - Hutch’s character’s daily routine before he gets back in action, his sea-saw relationship with his wife, the villain’s great traffic walk to his weirdly entertaining show revealing his “I am bad ass villain” nature, then Dutch’s father slowly being revealed to be another badass character. I loved all these bits in the midst of insanely violent and well thought action sequences plus Bob odenkirk’s amusing performance are the key ingredients that make this action film a great watch even with all the familiarities. I am ready for its sequel.
