Jake Gyllenhaal is an incredibly talented actor, and it’s truly remarkable.  I caught the reference to the Usual Suspects.  The cinematography throughout the movie is exceptional.  Somehow there’s only three and a half characters. The film manages to show you the characters complexities.  Still I wish there had been a bit more backstory to Lou is my biggest complaint.

What a fascinating study of human nature and how desensitized we have become to human pain. Great commentary on news and media culture and how human suffering itself has become a form of entertainment. Sensationalization of death to keep viewers interested and to make more money is such a fucked up habit that has been normalized. Gyllenhaal’s emotionless character, representing us money hungry and dopamine hungry humans with complete lack of empathy was such a scary character and he played it just so incredibly well. I sometimes also wonder when I watch films like Terrifier, where the film literally has nothing to offer other than innocent human beings getting brutally murdered and I find myself enjoying all of that, I wonder, why? Nightcrawler almost feels like the flipped coin of Drive: style and driving with a socially awkward leading man who falls in love and fights for that love. Only in Nightcrawler he falls in love with “the scoop” rather than a partner, and goes absolutely psycho. The culmination with Avi Arad... holy cow. Gyllenhaal packs a punch, between his ridiculously coherent and sound banter to how he derives conclusions that veer so far from ethical reality. It’s a ride.
