Shipwreck survivors found on the presumably uninhabited Infant Island leads to a scientific expedition that discovers a surviving native population along with the Shobijin, tiny twin fairy priestesses of the island's mythical deity called Mothra. After the fairies are kidnapped by an exploitative businessman named Clark Nelson, Mothra sets out to rescue them.

82/100 This is the one that turned the genre on its head, that dared to take sympathy for the monster one step further and spare the monster, and it's easy to see why it took off. The first act of this movie had me thinking it wasn't going to be as good as I remembered. Don't get me wrong, it was still good, but the pacing was slow enough that my attention began to wander. However, the human characters themselves already showcased their greatest strength: they're very entertaining. This movie has a colourful cast of entertaining characters, and all of them are good enough to the point I'd say this is one of the best human casts would get in the Showa era. One highlight here is the reporter Fukuda, who acts goofy but is terrifyingly competent under strain, rescuing babies from Mothra and, in one memorable occasion, beating four men at once.
