People don’t believe that there’s a mermaid but still we try to find whether it’s truth or not or want to experience magical feeling of it. In Moothon, that mermaid comes in a very different forms in multiple characters’ life. For Akbar (Navin) and Ameer (Roshan Matthew), it comes in the form of love. That feeling that only they know when they are together but people around them find this love (Mermaid) a myth and it results in a bad fate for both of them. Then for Mulla it’s about finding her Brother and she also has got Aamina’s number which might take her to the brother. She even imagines mermaid (That was Aamina character by the way) rescuing her in the ocean. That was her expectation that this mermaid will help her. But in reality she (Now not mermaid but bar dancer) doesn’t help in in the end.  The way society sees gender, identity, sexual orientation has always been one sided as if there’s a policy that people should follow in life. The other side of it society doesn’t care and think of it as a myth just like how people think mermaid is a myth. Every time characters in the film try to show the other normal side to the society, it gets them in a troubling situation. So basically mermaid can come in different forms in life. It can give you great other worldly feelings (Two superbly shot scenes - one with mermaid and other scene where large number of fish jumping on the boat implying Akbar’s happiness of discovering himself and love) but it can also end up giving you a troubling life which doesn’t have to do with the decisions characters take. It all has to do with the society and how they see certain things in a certain way.  Moothon was a story of different fates with brilliant performances by everybody (Navin, Sanjana Deepu, Shashank and Roshan). Even smaller roles like Shobitha was really good. Cinematography by Rajeev Ravi was stunning.  My only negative thing is it cud have been 2 hours plus too. Few stuffs felt like they rushed. The ending especially. Nonetheless a great and Multi layered film.
