After watching every Mission: Impossible multiple times, I can definitely say that this is my favorite and the best of them all. Every character is written and performed beautifully, and everyone has a part to play. I love the quiet, suspenseful action of the finale as opposed to the huge set pieces of the following films. I still love those, but this ending is just perfect. It feels much more Bond-esque. My favorite part of the movie has to be the entire opera sequence. Fun, exciting, and beautiful. And the themes of the opera somewhat mirror those of the film. Also, the best villain in the franchise, bar none. He’s like if Gabriel were actually competent. They show off how cold and calculating he is without him sounding bored. Genuinely threatening. Just an incredible performance.
If I have to compare this with Ghost Protocol, both have a similar overall impact, but the former had higher stakes, which made it more entertaining. However, this one is sharper and quicker, so Ghost Protocol is only slightly better.
