I really was looking forward to this movie simply because of how much it reminded me of Tetris (the movie), Mexico was hosting the world cup (in part at least) and beyond that I had also been on the hunt for good 20th century period pieces. TL;DR - it was alright. Obviously the art direction was on-point. The trailer did a great job of selling that, which is why i watched it. There's definitely some great humor in there, and Diego Luna is incredible in his performance. Having said that, the emotions didn't really land for me. I didn't find myself rooting for Martín, his ups and downs didn't seem to matter as much. Certain sequences in the first half are incredible, namely the voting episode at FIFA; but I was not too big a fan of how the movie ended, and the entire second half seemed rushed. In some regards it was also reminiscent of Marty Supreme. Not that I liked that one much more. In the end, this is kind of like the Anti-Thesis to Tetris: Similarly styled period piece, but rather than trynna be truthful, the protagonist is lying more than Odysseus. The film sets out to do a lot in a small amount of time, and towards the start it does succeed with it, until it kinda crashes into mediocrity, not unlike Martín himself. Overall, not a bad watch.
