Celine Song steered through all the romantic cliches possible yet she could reach her desired destination of making me feel what the film was intended to do. Very few directors could do this. Where I could see her getting into her PAST LIVES form here is in the way scenes are setup and played. I still remember most of the scenes because they were meticulously directed, shot and written. There’s a subtle sense of urgency in terms of what characters are going through. This is something I observed in PAST LIVES too which was far superior in subtlety and depth. Nonetheless it could move me in many scenes. Loved the ending a lot.  PAST LIVES was an instant classic and a MASTERPIECE. MATERIALISTS is emotionally lighter with bit of cliches yet still a memorable and an impactful film. That makes it 2 in a row for Celine ❤️
