This could be a confused combination of the janitors different fantasy's and preferences of women throughout his life. And also to note in his older years ( or before he died) his fragile ego would knock down any misconceptions of his dream woman noticing him at all in the first place. The ending could be an earlier fantasy he would have dreamt up (around middle or high school).

I think Charlie Kaufman is afraid of getting old.

mind fucking, and i'm not okay

I'm still processing how much I enjoyed this. It’s interesting that I just watched Eraserhead not so long ago, and this has the same dream-like feeling to it. Some of the things that happen in it even made me remember some of my own dreams, like the changing photo. For some reason my tv didn’t show it in the right aspect ratio(?) I really need to rewatch it sometime soon. I liked how mixed and interchangeable the thoughts of the “main characters” were. It adds to the ending. Every line of dialogue was interesting and full of depth. I felt very connected to the girlfriend, which is weird considering she doesn’t really exist. But I feel like this film argues that thoughts are just as real as anything else. This was beautiful.

Charlie Kaufman is a master of reading minds of depressed, lonely and troubled people and showcases it in a way like no one on this earth. It’s surreal, magical and magnificently tragic with phenomenal performances by all especially Jessie Buckley, Toni Collette and Jessie Plemons. Presentation is very close to his directorial debut Synecdoche, New York. Even the way central character thinks is slightly similar to the lead character in SNY. Why Kaufman is one of the best Writers/Directors and THE BEST in this genre (that’s almost always twisted In a good way) is, he literally knows how to project the character’s distressed mind in an allegorical yet fantastical way. You can get lot many stuffs about a character just by the character’s book preferences, poet, theatre and musicals, the way the character sees new people/new faces and struggles to interact with some of them as past comes in…

You know when you don't know what is happening, but you stay anyway because the confusion and the curiosity is what's keeping you going? This was it, I was so immersed, but confused. When you want to ask what is happening, but then you get distracted by another stuff anyway and then you remember that you are confused. Ok this review is getting confusing but u get it.
