Orphaned and alone except for an uncle, Hugo Cabret lives in the walls of a train station in 1930s Paris. Hugo's job is to oil and maintain the station's clocks, but to him, his more important task is to protect a broken automaton and notebook left to him by his late father. Accompanied by the goddaughter of an embittered toy merchant, Hugo embarks on a quest to solve the mystery of the automaton and find a place he can call home.

Scorses-a-thon “If you've ever wondered where your dreams come from, you look around... this is where they're made.” Aggressively 2010s. I think the middling reviews are probably due to that fact and because it is also a children’s film. Reminds me of stuff like City of Ember and the like. I think people (myself included) would prefer if this was just a straight Melies biopic, but I appreciate trying to get younger people to be interested in a bygone era that is by and large forgotten. In that way, it calls to mind the Age of Innocence. I do want to shout out how spot-on Kingsley is as Melies and I genuinely got emotional at the end when they showed his films. There is heart here, but it’s not perfect and definitely of its time. But outside of just showing his films, I think this is a good way to introduce young people to Melies and other silent films.
