Super interesting thing is this feels like 10% remake and 90% completely different film from tonality, the central focus areas and doesn’t care about the POV of detectives or their investigations. This is more single character centric. You don’t get many scenes of protagonist with the wife or a kid in the original but Spike Lee adds some strong ones. Here kids aren’t small kids, motive of a kidnapper is completely different, Social media scrutiny, protagonist’s profession is changed. It’s all very modern and cool but it kinda felt empty too. There’s literally little to no investigative procedural drama here like it was in the original. As a stand-alone film, this totally works - new world, tone and storytelling style. Denzel is too good. As a remake of a 5/5 film by Kurosawa, It doesn’t work and also kinda works. Mixed feelings.
