In the final months of World War II, 14-year-old Seita and his sister Setsuko are orphaned when their mother is killed during an air raid in Kobe, Japan. After a falling out with their aunt, they move into an abandoned bomb shelter. With no surviving relatives and their emergency rations depleted, Seita and Setsuko struggle to survive.

wow. brutal and heart wrenching. i truly have no words. the only words i have is this is the best movie that i’ll never watch again. i mean, the way it shows war through children’s eyes, it’s so simple yet so devastating. you root for them, want things to get easier, but it just keeps piling on. the animation is so beautiful too, even when what you’re seeing is unbearable. this film doesn’t feel like entertainment. it feels like hearing someone share a piece of their soul. and honestly, i can’t deal with that kind of pain more than once, but i’m glad i saw it.
