“You're not your job. You're not how much money you have in the bank. You're not the car you drive. You're not the contents of your wallet. You're not your fucking khakis. You're the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world.” SPOILERS There is a point where this stretches beyond relatability, and yet many, if not most, of us can relate to that desire to be someone else. To throw out that crock of horse shit we’ve been feasting on since we were young. All the bs we were told about the world and the way it works. What I would give to be able to let go and have someone else take the reins. To wake up and experience a brand new facet of life. The whole point of Fight Club, both in the film and the film itself, is to give up control. Like another great movie once said, “To fight, a reason to live.” I am riding life on cruise control, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. The very few responsibilities in my life prevent me from fully experiencing what my current world has to offer. And yet, without those responsibilities, would I venture out? Would I really try to live? I’d probably just watch more movies. Fight Club is like American psycho. Something that can easily be misconstrued and misunderstood in a variety of different ways. Is it gay? Is it straight? Is it woke? Is it not woke enough? Is it ironic? Is it serious? Is it good? Well, of course, it’s fucking good. That’s not even a question, you idiot. This film is the perfect addition to my four favorites. This year, my plan was to let my four favorites flow and change with whatever movie I had last seen that I liked the most, but honestly, this might be it. Maybe this is who I am. Or it’s who I want to be. But I’m probably just a poser.
