This is like “Promising young woman” of desi cinema and oh I am so happy that we got a movie like this. Promising Young woman was about a girl avenging the death of her best friend who committed suicide after she was raped, which was a black comedy too. In “Darlings” it’s slightly different as it’s about domestic abuse victim but genre is same which is black comedy thriller and the rage in the lead character though confused initially but is also similar to Carey Mulligan’s character. Kickass is the word for executing something as tough as this with dark comedy as a base genre. Thanks to stunning actors. Climax was thankfully very satisfying as this could have gone a very very obvious way. I was more impressed With the fact that this didn’t go overboard and was not slapstick-y. Yes few scenes in police station seemed like an usual sitcom thing but the overall writing and performances makes the film stronger. Also the usage of sounds/silence I absolutely loved. It meant something in a scene - If you observe in the first dinner table scene, you can listen to the surroundings as the camera slowly zooms in but immediately the sounds of the surroundings stops when Vijay Verma’s character bites onto a stone while eating a rice dish. We just hear nothing, we are made to feel that Vijay Verma’s character is about to explode anytime soon at Alia and he does. Few more such brilliantly directed and written scenes are there in this that surely made me give this an extra marks. We need more such films of this genre in India that is quirky yet giving that real impactful characters with real issues.
