Zemeckis-fest I believe that this was what Spielberg was going for in Disclosure Day. Using extraterrestrials to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of humanity. While I still believe that that is an important film, I can’t help but think that in its simplicity, this movie executes that idea better. Maybe less hopeful but more realistic.   The question this movie asks is which is right: religion or science? And of course, the answer is both. They are not mutually exclusive, and as this movie shows, even science requires faith.  Overall, this is such a simple film. It doesn’t leave a lot for subtext, which may or may not be your thing. It is what it is. I think the enjoyment comes from connecting to Jodie Foster’s character and her search for answers. For something bigger than herself.  There are some incredible shots in this that add to the emotional connection. That opening is so impactful. Obviously, this is not as grand and epic as Forrest Gump but still very beautiful. I’m glad I finally got to check this out.  “Beloved, said the Glorious One, unless thy desire had been for me, thou wouldst not have sought so long and so truly. For all find what they truly seek.”
