To describe this film in one word it would be “Classic”. This movie is slow and long but only cause it’s from 1977. The ending is amazing and makes you forget some stuff that happened before and is just so good. The cinematography is good nothing special but for the film and when it came out they did all they could and it was great. Another Spielberg classic and ofc it has to have that John Williams soundtrack.

I think I’m gonna stop watching Spielberg movies for a while. I’m a simple man, I see alien or space, I click, but waving and smiling at aliens? Fuck no. This was a bit too optimistic for my taste. I was expecting something more like Alien (1979) or The Thing (1982) where the unknown from space is a threat. Where a weird living thing just trying to survive, just like us, huh? Instead humans in this movie greet aliens with a toy piano, not missiles. It felt like watching a cartoon after those movies. I prefer my aliens scary, not friendly.

58/100 I've heard a lot about this film, but perhaps because of its influence, or perhaps just because it wasn't my cup of tea, I found the film boring for a good portion of its runtime and rather formulaic for the rest. Now don't get me wrong, there's more to like about this film than there is to hate. I do particularly like the effects, this film works as a great showcase for them. The UFOs are very realistic, showing why I prefer prefer practical effects. The tall, slender alien near the end was also executed very well, as was the alien that signs to the humans. However, even here, there is the occasional flop, especially in the child-sized aliens, with fake-looking masks that become visible the second they stop being silhouettes, showing why Spielberg chose to hide them. Of course, a Spielberg movie's going to have some flashes of style, but even he can't hide how boring this movie…
