Be my victim The Candyman is a brilliant introspection on the horror of America. A country that from its foundation was built on the backs of those who had no power. And as much as we progress and as much as we have changed as a society, the heart and souls of those people can be seen, heard, and felt to this day. We had the power to stamp out evil in this country at its conception, and we did not do it. And when the country was united after being split in two, that should have been the end of evil here, but it was only the beginning of something much darker. An evil that lives in the shadows and thrives on fear. And once again, we thought we defeated it, but it only slunk further into the dark. Laying in wait. Now it has struck. We are in a living nightmare, trapped and powerless. Our future has no certainty except that it will undoubtedly get worse. Candyman takes an unspeakable fear and brings it to life. A being destroyed by hate that lives on fear. That can exist in your heart and mind and haunts every aspect of your life. A being that seeks control in the way that all control was taken from him. You feel that fear in every moment of this film. Viscerally told in every frame, in every sound. I can hear him. I feel haunted by this film. An unease still washes over me that I can’t shake. This movie takes its ideas and lays them at your feet to internalize and digest. A masterpiece of true horror. “I am the writing on the wall, the whisper in the classroom. Without these things, I am nothing. So now, I must shed innocent blood.”
