#22 of 31 for Hooptober

Ok firstly this was one of my most awaited films of 2020 when the first trailer was out. So I was really waiting for this. I have not watched the original film too. But to my surprise this turned out to be very middling. This could have been a modern twisty take on the urban legend (Including Bloody mary folklore that we all know of), but instead it turned out to be pretty basic in a way it was written and executed. Even the film couldn't properly play with the visual language that would have been more powerful if it did in a fresh and unconventional way. In the end it really became those seen-before folklore stuffs with typical plotting with no surprise/shocking elements. The only powerful thing was the overall intent of the film that emphasis on racism and police brutality but that too at times goes somewhere down the drain sadly for me. I wish this had better execution as I could see massive scope in it to be a hugely symbolic movie without being over-simplistic. Sigh! PS - Watch “The Empty Man” instead. That gem deserves some recognition more than this.
