Felt like a journeyman effort with John Lasseter being the encouraging father who wants his kids to have a win. But it lacked the vision, charm, clever wit, and attention to detail that has made Pixar unique. It looks dated, mostly feels empty, and only 2% of the jokes actually landed with my kids. The contemporary Disney team just wasn’t ready to produce something great yet in the timeframe and budget provided to them.

The Disney movies from the 2000s are so great because they actually had interesting meta takes on stories. They felt original and in turn good. In a way very few movies have since.
