As soon as the Nitrous Oxide stuff came out about Kanye I thought this was the type of shit he was doing
I remembered how much I love Lynch movies. gotta rewatch lost highway this week.
I don’t have any mind for analysis, and thus most of this film just shoots over my head. The one thing I was able to latch onto was the music. How classic songs were used to symbolize a corruption and deterioration of good and contemporary music is used to represent a true, pure goodness. It’s pretty much the most obvious symbolism, as you can just look at the movie to understand how the music is supposed to make us feel. But as someone who loves these classic songs, their inclusion and the juxtaposition of it leave me with a deep, uncomfortable feeling. Which is obviously the intent. For the story in and of itself, the actual text feels almost as complex as the subtext. At face value, it’s a story of a young man who gets in over his head. But there are questions about his motivations. Why did Jeffrey really go to Dorothy’s apartment that first night? Sandy only told him that she might be involved in the case. But for some reason, he just decides the logical next step is to break into her apartment? I think it’s clear that there is some darkness in Jeffrey. Hell, Frank says as much. Maybe it’s the same evil that’s in all of us. I don’t know. The ending is interesting as well. While the whole film has dreamlike elements, the ending feels especially unrealistic. Literally like a dream or a fantasy. But as I said, I have no mind for analysis, so I have no idea what any of it means.
Kyle MacLachlan's effort to learn the chicken dance for this movie did not go unnoticed. Here’s my review: https://open.substack.com/pub/archreviews/p/critics-corner?r=1xnpzx&utm_medium=ios&utm_campaign=post
