Before watching Greta Gerwig's new movie, "Barbie," I had sky-high expectations. Being a huge fan of her previous works, like "Frances Ha" and "Mistress America," as well as her directorial work, "Little Women," I couldn't wait to see what she would do with "Barbie." But, admittedly, I had some doubts too. How would she handle a movie about an iconic child’s toy? Would the movie still feel like a classic Greta film, or would it drift into mainstream territory? The buzz surrounding it by Barbenheimer only increased the hype. In "Barbie," the story revolves around the stereotypical barbie who embarks on a real-world adventure to understand her owner's thoughts she’s been having. But the real world isn't what she imagined, and she discovers troubling truths about Barbie's influence, realizing it may not be the empowering symbol she thought. Meanwhile, Ken ventures into the real world to learn what it means to be a "Man" and returns to Barbieland with a newfound mission to make it Kenland. The film takes us on an exhilarating journey as Barbie and her owner work together to restore and improve Barbieland through whimsy and emotion. The film's tone and style were right up my alley. It had a unique blend of humor that reminded me of "Scott Pilgrim," "Elf," and "Edward Scissorhands." Greta Gerwig's comedic sensibilities, which I adore from her acting roles, shone through brilliantly in the movie.

Barbie (2023) ReView • Well, it’s pretty average. I didn’t expect much from it, and it turned out to be basic storytelling. One praiseworthy aspect is the soundtrack. Songs like "I'm Ken" and "What Was I Made For?" are enjoyable. I think they missed the mark on conveying maturity. If they wanted to portray a mature theme, the vibrant colors and comic scenes don’t blend well with it.
