Unfortunately lost its way after an excellent first half. Much like The Cube and Pi before it, there's no real reason it exists and it leaves you wanting some sort of ending. The Cabin in the Woods did this sort of thing so much better.

Instant interpretation of the movie that I loved. Felt like putting this long spoiler opinion out, even though I am not sure anyone will read it or not.  So the thing is there is one mysterious Backrooms where it’s endless with empty spaces, flickering lights and weird things happening. Clark gets trapped there, with his employees who die later.  Then Mary comes to find him and she gets trapped too until Clark finds her but shockingly he ties her up to a chair and explains his understanding of the place with 3 other creepy distorted people. From my understanding, those are the people who are remembered abstractly by this place or don’t even remember them properly. It applies to places and things too. “Misremembering themselves” - That’s what I got from Clark’s explanation. I scratched my head here thinking whether this place is consuming only those who are traumatised or lonely in reality like Clark is? Is he really explaining the place properly, or is it just his way of interpreting the place? It’s implied that he was not killed initially (until Mary finds him) by that weird pirate guy who looks like Clark only?? Or he was not killed initially because the creepy pirate guy/creature already had some part of lonely and traumatised Clark in him?? This theory is crushed in the climax and again I kinda scratched my head (I will come back to this).  Somehow the empty spaces too might be remembered in the same way and so they are distorted by the place??? Some parts of past lives, like furniture or banners can end up stuck in those places but distorted or in an abstract way. This is what I got from it TBH. In the end Mary gets caught by the people who are also researching the same place. They start questioning her. From the conversation and that dialogue by researcher named Phil “I am not taking that decision” when Mary asks him whether she can go out, explains why her other self in that final shot is now distorted in those empty spaces, facing the same fate as those 3 people with Clark. She’s also now remembered abstractly or in a distorted way. Returning to the earlier theory, this climax effectively disproves one part of theory. Mary was not lonely or mentally unwell like Clark, yet she was remembered in a distorted way. So by my earlier logic, she shouldn’t have been consumed by the place with her distorted version later. This is a deliciously ambiguous open ending. This is my full understanding of the film.  There is one good theory I read where he or she mentioned that the place was doing distorted copies from reality or whoever visited the place, which is very much possible theory too and some of my interpretations also kinda indirectly suggest the same.  

2026 ranked After this watch, I’ve really settled into this movie, and more stuff has fully clicked with me now. I feel like I understand these characters and what they represent a little more now. Cycles and giving into them or breaking free. Still life Clark can’t change itself any more than the real Clark can. It is his worst attribute made manifest and amplified, whether literally or metaphorically. Clark thought he could tame it or understand it, but he can’t even understand these aspects in himself. And it consumes him.  Mary lets go and breaks free of the cycle and breaks free from the back rooms. Or does she? Maybe you can never really escape. Does anyone really change?

If Clark is here then where is Jimmy and Lois?

What an insane movie! Love how unnerving it was, and didn't really mind the switch up halfway through. Actually enjoyed the dinner scene quite a lot.

Chiwetel Ejiofor i Renatka nieco ratują, ale to film który nieudolnie robi cosplay Babadooka, po to żeby rozmyślić się w ostatniej chwili. Scenografie potrafią zrobić wrażenie, zwłaszcza ta sekwencja ze schodami (how?!).
