I really thought after watching this for a few minutes that this would be like any other sadistic story of a teenager who has cancer with all the familiar tropes and predictability. But as and when the film starts getting into its grove, there was something special about this. Yes, it did have similar coming-off age and cancer character tropes but what was so special about this is the way it’s all written and beautifully presented. Also at times the lead character’s response to some of the stuffs was like breaking the stereotypes and then writing gets even better when it comes to her parents and the way they react to her daughter loving a guy who is a drug addict. It suddenly felt all so fresh within those similar tropes. And the soundtrack is as beautiful as it was presented. Almost every supporting character is messed up here, nobody is perfect and also given full circle arc in some way or the other. Best arc was of her parents. It was heartwarming yet so so emotional. I should mention that in the beginning 20 minutes or so I felt it had an issue with editing. It seemed disconnected at times. That’s until it starts getting better and better adding some special moments here and there, lovely direction and ending with a scene that is easily one of best scenes in any coming-off age film. Overall a fresh take.  And what a killer ensemble cast. Eliza (Sharp objects girl), Toby and especially Ben Mendelsohn as her daddy was fabulous.
