Right from the title screen, this movie just rolls. You can see cinematography, editing, and writing influences from Hot Fuzz, a movie director Joe Cornish himself appeared in. It’s fast-paced, but not too fast. The music is great and engaging. The jokes don’t always get you to laugh, but the dialogue is so much fun to follow. And the creature design is first rate. Love the glowing layers of teeth against the blackest black alien fur. It’s earnest and sincere. You can tell everyone behind the camera had so much love for filmmaking. It’s a great story of consequences for bad choices, forgiveness, and redemption on a backdrop echoing the best themes in sci-fi creature features before it.
