After isolating myself to a single show for two months, namely David Lynch’s Twin Peaks the tv series, taking each episode in slow and with measured viewing knowing how perfect it was and at the same time, limited in its runtime. I don’t think I’ve been this passionate about expressing my love for any piece of media like I have with the world of Twin Peaks. Though I always knew of its existence growing up, my first experience with David Lynch’s work; Eraserhead, was not a very inviting one for a first timer. This only made Twin Peaks feel like a daunting mental task to get over, which I felt best to avoid to save my own idea of being an apparent cinephile. Anyways…I loved the show, enough to make myself a twin peaks sheriff’s department mug at the least. sidenote: Special agent Dale Cooper just might be my favourite fictional character of all time. This movie prequel however, was starkly contrasting from the serious but mostly light hearted and soulful series to a very raw and downright sadistic look at the last few days of Laura Palmer. I felt the writing in some scenes were too on the nose with the depth of what the characters were feeling in contrast to what was going onscreen. I guess it isn’t a fair ask and neither a fair give to expect a whole show and all it’s loose ends from a prequel point of view to be tied in a short span of two hours. The whole movie had my gut in a knot with all the tension and imagery building. But the transition of Laura to her last night was so rushed, it took away from the rest of the ending which was a weirdly beautiful spectacle of depression and supernatural beings in action. I want to write so much more, more so about the show than the movie. But this world…it’s certainly moved something basic in me.
