The Wicker Man1973

1970s Horror One of the best atmospheres in any movie I’ve ever seen. Cosmic horror sans cosmos. But with the same spiral into an unknowable world. This film and its remake are too well known, as I think this would play so much better if I had absolutely no idea about the story or where it was headed. Even still, that shot when we first see the wicker man is horrifying. It is so abnormal and obviously designed for one purpose.  I think it’s perfect in its brevity. If it were any longer, I would undoubtedly completely check out, but as it is, I think the pacing and plot work perfectly. This is one of my favorite kinds of stories. Mysterious and ambiguously supernatural, where the only sign of a greater force is the belief in one.  I think it’s a shame that the remake should overshadow this film, though it seems on here that is not the case. Definitely one of the best of seventies horror and a new classic for me.
