Preacher Harry Powell is one of the great villains of cinema and a powerful force of evil. There is so much to this movie, but the thing that I latch onto is how people are willing to believe anyone that they see as aligning with their values. And no matter how suspicious or evil their actions, as long as they say they are “Christian” or what have you, they will forgive and excuse anything they do.     “You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.” A picture that takes black-and-white filmmaking to its peak. Just a gorgeous, gorgeous film.
