The Final Shot: A Farewell to Boardwalk Empire2014

Scorses-a-thon A review for the first episode of Boardwalk Empire.  It makes total sense why Scorsese would want to work on this show as it totally fits in with his body of work. I really like this world; having it set in Prohibition is interesting, but honestly, I just wish it was a full movie. It’s a shame he only directed the first episode.  I liked this enough that I’ll probably watch the whole season. It definitely doesn’t hold up to his other gangster films but only because of the limitations of television, even for a big HBO show like this.  Buscemi is great, and the cast overall is strong except for Jimmy. He’s just kind of meh. Hopefully, he comes into his own as the show goes on.  So on the whole, really good. I just wish there was enough here that I could enjoy it on its own. But it’s not a movie; it’s a tv show, and they want you to keep watching. And I think to that end, it accomplished its goal.
