Last time I've seen this movie it was through the marveled eyes of my younger self, coming back at it now, more than a decade later, with grown up eyes and a luggage full of experiences of my own, I was scared, scared that the movie I have so admired was only good through the lenses of a kid that only sought to dream, and by all means, I'm glad I was wrong, as I watch it today, with more empathy in my heart, Spider-man 2 served as a reminder of my innocence and the portrait of the man I am. I am now around the same age as you are Peter, I graduated high school, dreamt some dreams and gave up others, fell in love and rejected it and lost some friends along the way. I relate to you now even more than I ever did. Fundamentally, what is Spider-man 2 about, is it about a man in a tight spandex suit fighting a scientist gone mad with six metal arms? yes that is true, but it is also a story of a man understanding what it's like to grow up, the tremendous task of becoming one; of becoming one's desires and balancing it with the heavy weight of responsibilities. It's a character study about dreamers constantly challenged to keep their dreams alive. And it's also a story about love, friendship, loneliness, betrayal and the cocktail of emotions that comes with young adulthood. Peter Parker – Otto Octavius intelligence is not a privilege it's a gift you use for mankind Arguably the heart of the movie, both as individual characters and as the relationships that ties them together. what makes them interesting is realizing they are not so far different from one another, in fact they are very, very similar to each other, and yet, here they are, exchanging fists and throws. Both geniuses dedicated their life to making their dreams real, both dream for a better world, Otto wanted to create a free energy source for everyone, and Peter, well Peter is Spider-man, in his dreams he is Spider-man (I'll get to that later on) Otto in this film works as a role model to Peter, or an older brother figure, they geek out about science and he shares wisdom about love in times he direly needs it “if u want to get a girl it’s through poetry”; They instantly click and become fond of one another. Until one fateful experience, where Otto’s pride took his lover, forever fractured, his dream is now shattered, once shared with his wife, his compass, he now shares it with four mechanical arms that persuade him to chase said dream for better or for worse; The birth of Dr. Octopus. Doesn't it sound familiar ? if it doesn't, then let me remind you of the story of Spider-man. One fateful match, Peter Parker's pride took the best of him, costing him the life of his uncle, his compass, forever fractured, he now shares his dream with the spider that bit him creating this persona that persuades him to chase his dream, for better or for worse. A loss that serves as a fluctuation point for both characters, one turned from a boy to a man, the other turned from a man to a monster, a difference ever so apparent in the way they handle this loss, Peter chose to wear it as a burden, sacrificing his own being every day for the well-being of other strangers, for the greater good, Otto Octavius decided to use his loss to fuel his conquest that shifted from an altruistic motive to a personal one while still justifying said actions as altruistic ones in the name of science and progress. Flash-forward after some punches, there comes a moment of clarity and redemption and it wasn’t through senseless beating, but through what I consider a powerful moment, Spider-man unmasks himself in front of his enemy, revealing his vulnerability, Peter’s eyes, those of the young man he was fond of, and here Peter recites the exact words and lesson Otto taught him earlier, that intelligence is a gift for mankind and thus Peter not only takes on the role of the mentor but he reminds Otto of the man he once were, of the values he stood for; Breaking his curse, Otto Octavius defeats Dr. Octopus, and with his newly retrieved humanity, he learns from Peter and does what Peter has always done, he takes responsibility for his actions, he offers his life as a gift to mankind. Peter Parker the alienated Man where gift turns into curse yes, the core of the film is Otto and Peter's relationship, but the beating heart of the film is Peter Parker's world, his friends, his family and himself.
