Saturday Night is a nice little piece of nostalgia but unfortunately not much more. And I really, really wanted to love this movie. I mostly agree with the consensus; it’s a beautifully shot movie with a fun premise held together by a young cast of impressionists ... sounds familiar. Reitman Jr. cleverly filmed the movie in real time. While the movie looks great, it doesn’t evoke what I felt the first time I saw SNL’s seasons 1-5. Instead it may remind you of Birdman's chaotic and claustrophobic hallways scenes with less tension. Maybe Birdman’s tension works because you're anxiously waiting for the shot to cut. A lot of scenes work in Saturday Night but the pacing is off when it all comes together. The movie doesn’t ever sing. Ya know? A tight concept that literally shows you the countdown needs a rhythm. Also it would help if your supporting actors stop saying you can try again next week.
