Sardar Udham2021

Firstly I don’t think I had watched a scene in any Indian film as disturbing as Jallianwala Bagh massacre scene. Absolutely bold filmmaking and too real to say the least and it made me cry.  The narrative is not an usual biopic writing that we see. This movie starts with an ending and ends with the beginning. So basically the film is exploring WHYs of Sardar Udham’s motive and in a non-linear way it takes the story forward. I liked this and have always liked such kind of a narrative if it’s done well but here this style slowly tends to fade as I could feel the dryness of the script, especially after 1 hour mark. Inconsistency and repetitiveness of Spy genre traits starts to creep in for another 30 minutes or so. This is where the beautifully shot movie with stunning production design takes the backseat as writing starts being repetitive and suddenly feels uninteresting. I would have wanted Shoojit to make this narrative smoother yet not loosing that impact from one scene to another. But thankfully the last 40 minutes is what was core part of the film and of course Vicky being at his best here. This part is the soul of the film. Brutal, bold and hard hitting stuff.  Overall this is a much much better biopic that has come out from Bollywood compared to many other duds. This has top notch production values and Vicky’s best performance. I wish the writing wasn’t too repetitive in the middle. Weakest of Shoojit yet he has not made a single bad film so far which is why he’s one of the best in India right now.
