Reality felt like a showcase for Sydney Sweeny to show her range. Reality Winner is the antithesis of Sweeny’s Euphoria character. She’s subtle; smart, trusting, and quiet. I think she did great. I was drawn into the story which mostly hung on Sweeny’s performance. There was some interesting camerawork and lighting that helped you feel Reality’s anxiety during the interrogation. I’d categorize this as an experimental film. The dialogue is ripped directly from the transcript. And the director really hammers in the fact that this is a direct transcript, but I think it helped. Chair shuffling was heard over an image of digital audio reading. The words in the transcript appeared in the document itself during dialogue that sounded a little choppy. But the redactions were handled most interestingly. The sound changed to a muffler inaudible sound. It was neat. I hope this gets Sweeny new types of projects.
