Poor Things2023

I call only few directors as a “Mad genius” and one of them is Yorgos Lanthimos. Yet again he proved why he’s a mad mad genius. Yet again providing something that I proudly say #MyShit certified stuff from top to bottom. Who would have thought we would get to experience a self-discovery movie with a world that is outright bizarre and twisted with science yet it all feels too real - the emotions, the realisation of cruelty in the world (sense of being in a prison without being in an actual prison) and the meaning of a word “Freedom”. All these seem to be too deep/real but Yorgos managed it with his signature humour with all the clever word play. Emma, Mark and William Defoe all were at their best. Emma especially blew me away. The expression of no guilt or no shame on her face even when she’s going through a lot with a developing baby’s brain inside her was shown perfectly. It’s not an easy character to play. Baby brain Is developing at a rapid rate, character’s ability to grow, learn is also developing at the same speed —  Bella’s exploration of a twisted world and also self-exploration wouldn’t have come across that well without Emma’s flawless performance. Just compare her demeanour in scene one to the last few scenes. Masterfully performed and what an arc.  Yorgos with cinematographer Robbie Ryan has created a world that is completely fresh to look at that is unlike anything I have seen before. Yorgos’s filmography grows with another gem and with that more #MyShit certified films for me. YESSSS!!!!
