Poor Things2023

What a beautiful world is crafted here. Of course it couldn’t be different. We see it from the eyes of the, at first innocent, but always optimistic, Bella Baxter. The world is wide, full of possibilities, and it looks that way! And it’s so weird!! The lenses and score that would usually highlight a specially weird moment in other films is ever-present here.  Back to the characters, I loved how the humor is done with them, never with too much of a sense of irony, but always extreme sincerity. Bella and Godwin ARE weird but always believe they are completely normal.  (There’s a hilarious line from Godwin about something that seemed obvious to him). And with Bella's honesty and straightforwardness come a lot of the film's social commentary. When seeing the world for the first time, how would we look at it? And why do we just accept it as it is right now? Everything about “polite society” here was really fun to see through Bella's eyes. And what a performance by Emma Stone!!! She goes from the mannerisms of a baby to the behavior of a grown-up in an hypnotic way. It’s one of those films that while it has its thematic focuses (sex, feminism, freedom etc) feels like it speaks to the broader, human experience!
