Art and life, the silence of the void against the nosie of the world. Refuged due to a pandemic, the world satnds still, almost noiseless, and we follow two "noise artists" that form a duo. In a world like this, was this an opportunity to bring noise to the world ? or to record the sound of silence ? both, the answer is both, with their art, the duo captured soemthing unique, something so unique that it cured the sick. "Lemming Syndrome" as the movie calls it, a virus that drives the contaminated to kill himself, not outta of pain but despair, and i don't think its a dispair born out of lack of hope, looking at those who fell to the virus, its felt so bleak, soulless, like an act that lacks agency when it shouldn't, people on autopilot, i don't think its the disease that brings despair, i think it amplifies it, to a point where the silence gets too loud and our voices fade to the background, our bodies become driven by a numbing void, moving agaisnt us ? or with us ? maybe thats what we truly wanted. it is so fitting, that a "cure" found its form in soundwaves, sounds that were simply captured from the world around us, well, you might ask,if the cure is noise, then why isn't everybody healed ? we all have some sort of noise around us, the world is always making sounds and yet people are still dying, but do you listen to those sounds ? do you even pay attention to how the world speaks ? think of the grass dancing to the howl of the wind, or beats of water as it hits the pavement, and the hissing of the fire slowly eating life away, it crackles a bit but it keeps going, if you listen in closely you might be able to hear its rhythm, but the destructive light it emits distracts you from it all. with how out of touch everyone is, it is no surprise that things like these go unnoticed; And this where the arists come in, they bring harmony to these scattered sounds, turning them into something that can be gifted, for those who only hear silence they bring melody, for those who forgot how to see the world they make you hear it. And that's how our "duo" "cured" the world. Money and Sickness Despite the the movie's prtagonist being the duo, the movie spends a lot of time if not centers around, the grandfather and his sick granddaughter, or more implicitly, a man of status and the heir to his business; i think tahts why they refused to cure her at first, as they saw beyond the family bonds imposed on them, they saw this man's vile attempts to preserve his legacy, he did not truly care abt her, she was just a futur investment so that the machine could keep going. Maybe thats the same machine that brought this pandemic, it gave birth to dispair. the movie is made in 2005 but it's actualty set in 2015, a choice that has no meaningful ramification on the narrative. i view it as a pessimistic projection from the creator, in a world where people fall ill fom a despair virus, their aftermath is a quiet suicide, where they can not be seen. it feels like an allegory to society our world is fuelled by money, and we're all part of this machine, that forces us to constantly chase, 8hrs a day, 6 days a week, it kills something in us, and sometimes it kills us whole and that's the real suicide that all of us takes but are unaware of, its so bleak and soulless like an act that lacks agency when it shouldn't, people on autopilot...
